Noise Catalogue
Biography
“These are exceptional musicians who are wholly committed to advancing the cause of contemporary music.”
-New York Concert Review
Described as “compelling”, “highly energetic”, “fascinating”, and “oppressively loud” by New York Concert Review, Noise Catalogue is a contemporary music collective comprised of Madeline Hocking (violin), Dániel Matei (percussion), and Jonathan Collazo (percussion), in addition to the vast array of musicians and artists with whom they collaborate in their unique concert curations.
Noise Catalogue was founded upon a shared passion for bringing new musical works to life, and a vision for diversifying the artistic voices in the world of contemporary music. Their work is centered around intimate collaborations with composers and creators in other mediums, and composing genre-fluid original works which explore the members’ rich array of musical influences as performer-composers. The ensemble maintains a busy performance schedule at venues such as the Banff Centre for Arts and Creativity, the Tenri Cultural Institute of NYC, the New School of Music in Cambridge, Massachusetts, the Sō Percussion Studio, and Bito Performance Space at the Bard Conservatory. They have been awarded grant funding from the Foundation of Contemporary Arts, and were winners of the 2023 Dwight & Ursula Mamlok Junior prize, awarded to individuals or ensembles making a significant contribution to the performance of contemporary music. Recent performance highlights for the ensemble include playing a double bill concert with the Rhythm Method Quartet in New York City, being featured on the ‘Sō Laboratories’ concert series in Brooklyn, performing in the Evolution: Classical Festival in Banff, Canada, and collaborating with composers Thomas Palmer, Bahar Royaee, and visual artist Knox Peters on an interdisciplinary concert program which premiered last spring.

Mission
Noise Catalogue was founded upon a desire to create universally engaging contemporary music concerts. Our work draws on a diverse range of musical influences, including minimalism, contemporary classical avant-garde, Hungarian and Romanian folk, and electro-acoustic ambient music. We seek new ways of synthesizing these influences by collaborating with artists of diverse backgrounds, as well as creating original works.
We believe that amid the constant flow of data and stimuli that surrounds us, meaning can be discovered through experimentation and synthesis. Our name serves as a metaphor for this process - cataloguing the noise of the world and recombining it into concert experiences which are both innovative and emotionally resonant. Using this guiding principle, we design experiences which celebrate the diverse means by which humans sift through the world’s chaotic noise to uncover purpose, connection, and beauty.
